🜙 Character Information

⤛ Name: Jonathan Strange
⤛ Appearance: from a canonpoint where he was remarkably put together (it gets so much worse later on)
⤛ Canon: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell (tv adaptation)
⤛ Age: late 30s
⤛ Race: Elf
⤛ Racial trait: Wildlander
⤛ Race details: Fortunately, there is not much difference between 'my pb is a skinny British dude' and 'elf.' Strange looks relatively the same as he does in canon, just with pointed ears, a lither frame, a few inches taller than average, and no facial hair. His hair is a mess of black curls with a lot of premature gray.
⤛ Choice: Reason. All three choices fit Strange's personality pretty well, but as Thalassa makes the most sense for the backstory, 'reason' it is.
⤛ Abilities: in canon, Strange is an intensely powerful magician. A lot of Strange's spells are manipulating something to doing something else: turning sand into horses of sand to upright a boat, creating flat roads for marching from random rocks, sending water from a well to put out a fire, enchanting vines to pick up and toss people, creating a giant hand out of mud, changing the weather, etc. He can scry, travel in between different realms, summon faeries, communicate via reflection, break enchantments, cast tracking spells, raise the dead, turn a person into a cat, and manipulate all the magic of England itself. He also knows various dumb situation spells (swapping an item with it's reflection? magical dreaming? summoning a kidnapped king back from wherever he's kidnapped?) because Strange's magic mostly works on 'how can it best serve the plot.'

So basically he's getting nerfed to hell and back.

Strange's magic in-game will mostly be focused around wild magic, specifically elemental and weather manipulation. He'll know a couple of utility spells in the arcane branch (most notably, scrying and enchantment breaking). It takes concentration to manipulate wild magic and any effects of the magic (trees uprooted, water drained, etc.) remains after he cast the spell. Travel between realms, summoning faeries, and manipulating large amounts of magic are straight up nerfed, unless there are plot reasons for those spells to happen (in which case, I'll ask the mods first).

I would like him to keep his necromancy, as Strange was starting to explore the limits of magic before he died. It's really shitty necromancy: Strange could only raise a corpse in the condition that it was in when it died and couldn't maintain any control over the corpse. I can understand if the mods don't want it to be outright raising the dead and can happily swap it to another equally shady spell if needed.

⤛ Skills: Writing books, being intensely passive aggressive in book reviews, and getting into petty fights. AU Strange knows more basic survival skills than canon Strange. Where canon Strange's 'fuck all this I'm out' moment led him to going to a different country, AU Strange's led him towards the woods. As such, he knows skills such as starting a fire, identifying edible berries, setting basic snares for food, etc. He's no Bear Grylls, but he can keep himself alive.

⤛ Personality:

- ARROGANT: There's an entire prophecy that calls out Strange as being an arrogant shit. He thinks he's better than other people, he thinks that he can solve any problems by himself, and he refuses to accept that there are things he cannot do.

- SELF-DESTRUCTIVE: Strange has the self-preservation instinct of a suicidal lemming. He doesn't mind hurting himself, destroying himself, or doing downright dangerous things in order to get what he wants. The biggest example of this is when he literally makes himself crazy in order to see faeries and achieve a piece of magic.

- OBSESSIVE: Strange obsesses over certain topics, people, ideas, etc., often to the point where he can't see bad decisions, faults in his thought processes, or the consequences of his actions. Whether it's an ideology or a particular spell, he laser-focuses on a particular thing and puts it in the top of his single-minded nature. Tragically, he spends almost an entire week trying to bring his wife back from the dead before burying her (and then he still doesn't give up on that idea.)

- IMPULSIVE: Strange does things without thinking. He barges into places, confronts people, and makes choices based on what he wants to do in the moment without taking a pause to think things over and think 'huh, maybe I shouldn't go explore a faerie realm that I know absolutely nothing about.' Strange is 100% ruled by his heart and it's a very lucky day when he actually takes a moment to pause and think with his head.

- DETERMINED: Partly tying into his arrogance and obsessiveness, Strange doesn't give up. He's needlessly stubborn and when he's trying something, he wants to see it through to the end. Even while almost dying and even after their first attempt failed horribly, he does not give up on his goal of saving his wife from faerie.

- CHARISMATIC: Despite his tirefire of a personality, Strange gets along well with people. He's described as 'charming' and certainly comes across as much more sociable than Norrell, his mentor. He knows how to deal with politicians, statesmen, and things of that sort...but whether he chooses to hob-nob and use that charisma is another matter entirely.

- CARING: Once you get past the arrogance, self-destructive nature, and obsessive personality disorder, Strange is a caring person. He deeply cares about the friendships and relationships he has, to the point where he was willing to give up magic to make his wife happy.

⤛ Canon History: wiki link here. As a note, this is book canon while Strange is tv canon. The tv adaptation is a pretty straightforward adaptation but most notably, there's a bigger emphasis on Strange's relationship with Arabella in the tv show.

⤛ Key History Events:

- DISCOVERING HIS MAGICAL POTENTIAL: Strange had magic for most of his childhood but, as he grew up on the outskirts of the kingdom, he didn't know much about what you could do with magic (and his abusive dillhole of a father never actually told him about what magic could do). So when dad kicked the bucket, Strange got married and his wife (Arabella) tried to push him into a profession. A traveling vagrant told him about university, Strange applied, got in, and then was opened up to a whole new world of magic that he never knew of.

During his time in university, Strange's magic flourished. He became an accomplished student and pushed his magic into new and different ways. He apprenticed under one of the senior faculty members, a magician named Norrell, and eventually worked his way up so that Strange served as a lecturer and teacher in his own right. He fit in with university life quite well and here is where Strange flourished and grew into his own person.

- SPLITTING FROM NORRELL & UNIVERSITY: Unfortunately, he grew a little bit too much into his own person. After ten or so years at university (and right around the time the dragons' hunger started to spread), Strange started developing his own ideas that went counter to some of the stated train of thought. Most notably, these included an interest in dark and draconic magic. Strange viewed the university as putting limits on magic, tying it all up in respectability politics, instead of exploring magic and learning about it for it's own sake. After many long, drawn-out fights with Norrell (and some academic sniping via book reviews), Strange left the university, intent on making his own path in the world of magic.

- THE LOSS OF HIS WIFE: Unfortunately, not too long after he left university, Arabella came down with a mysterious illness and died. It took almost a week for Strange to actually accept the death of his wife: and even then, it was less 'acceptance' and more 'her brother convinced him that he needed to bury the body.' He still hung around Thalassa, but his mood had deteriorated and all of his energy was focused on his book: A History and Practice of Draconic Magic, Volume 1, a super lengthy and very pro-dragon tome that attempts to explain the ins and outs of dragons.

- BEING A CRAZY WOODS HOBO: After his wife died and his book was published, Thalassa held nothing for him. Strange left in order to learn more about magic, explore the limits of what magic could do, and (though he doesn't publicly admit it) learn a few more spells with regards to black magic and necromancy. This was during the war: the madness sweeping through the lands hit Strange and it hit him hard. His sanity just trainwrecked as Strange fell face-first into black magic and also tried a few riskyass spells to boost up his own magical power (most notably, trying and failing to summon a dragon.) His reputation around Thalassa tanked as Strange went from 'a former lecturer at university, he had so much potential, pity about his wife' to 'insane lunatic who lives in the woods.' It's during this period of absolute madness that Strange died, sniped down by a battlemage as he attempted a necromancy ritual on some poor dead battlefield corpse.
