When Shura lets her fingers linger on his, Strange doesn't make any attempt to move. He laps up every opportunity for Shura to touch him, letting their fingers linger as long as possible. It's only when she pulls away that he decides to pull away as well.
He remains standing while he eats: less of a chance for the dragons to get to his food that way. And instead, he watches as Alistair continues kicking with force and starts trying to wrestle Shura's hand into submission.
"I've got gauze and bandages if he breaks the skin."
"He ain't biting too hard," Shura replies. His teeth were sharp, but he's not quite biting or kicking hard enough to draw blood. That would take a bit more effort from him. Sure, her hand would be a little scratched up from all this, but it wasn't anything she couldn't handle.
Aconite is slowly creeping up, still trying to figure out what's going on. Once she reaches Shura, she stands on her hind legs to get a better glimpse. That's just wrestling? Is that why he's whining? She doesn't understand, but she'll watch and listen to Alistair for a moment. For Shura, two dragonets in her lap is two too many, and in a moment, she'll be getting up and letting the dragons fall if they aren't smart enough to get up on their own. They would probably need food, and then... bed? She hardly knows if Strange keeps Alistair on a regular schedule, but they'd pass out after eating, right??
Alistair is not smart enough to get up on his own. Instead, he falls to the ground, making a pathetic little squeak as he does so. Strange can't help but roll his eyes at the little dragon as he takes another bite out of his food.
"I'll need to teach him to start hunting sooner or later. He won't stay that small forever."
Shura pays Alistair's pathetic squeak no mind. Aconite is apparently used to Shura sudden;y moving and lands a bit more gracefully, going to sniff Alistair once she gets back on her feet. "Get him some bugs to chase after. He'll figure it out if he doesn't get his lunch." But would Strange let his precious baby go hungry? Based on Alistair's chonk, Strange letting his poor baby boy starve for an hour was unlikely.
Now dragonfree, Shura will move to sit on the couch. It's a better place to drink, and she'll draw her legs up on the couch, leaving just enough room for one (1) scrawny wizard. "What are you feeding him, anyway?" Not how much, but what.
"Usually whatever I'm eating," Strange answers. So yes, letting his poor baby starve was unlikely. "He won't eat all of it, of course, but I'll give him a little bite of whatever I'm eating."
As Shura draws her legs up on the couch, Strange moves over towards her to sit down next to her, still working on his meat pie as he moves. Alistair awkwardly rolls over to get back on his feet, giving Aconite a few happy chirps once he's right side up.
Guess who's getting tackled the moment he's on his feet?
"I see." The questions then was what was Strange eating, but that feels like a personal question, one that ought to be broached when she wasn't already a little overwhelmed with Strange's completely lack of boundaries.
But hey, she's trying to be affectionate, so when he's settled on the couch, Shura will just stretch her legs out over his lap. This would make him happy, right??
RIP Alistair. He makes a surprised little squeaky noise when Aconite tackles him, but then starts wrestling with her the moment she's on top of him.
When Shura stretches out, Strange's eyes widen for a little bit before he smiles, letting her stretch over his lap. This does indeed make him happy. "I'm glad you're here," he simply says, giving Shura a smile.
The dragons can enjoy more wrestling, at least until one of them decides they're cranky and/or hungry. So long as no one's crying, Shura can ignore them.
With her legs in his lap, Shura can't ignore Strange and his sappiness. But he seems pleased with the invasion of his personal space, and so Shura will just let herself get comfortable, sitting and sipping at her drink.
"Yeah? I wouldn't have guessed," Shura says wryly, as if the man wasn't trying to get in her pants within an hour of seeing her.
Yeah, he knows it's obvious. Strange can't help but roll his eyes at Shura before giving her a small smile.
And guess what, it's the 'time to get way too emotional' power hour.
"I know it's obvious. But I honestly thought I'd never feel this relaxed in ages. Even before our resurrections, there was a time where I wondered if I would be truly comfortable with someone ever again."
On the one hand, it's nice to see that Strange is open about his feelings. On the other hand, could he not like, be like this? He was completely sober! Shura is now determined to be at least a little tipsy, so she'll just casually take a nice gulp of her moonshine as if she's not completely out of place talking to the emotional catastrophe that she's decided to bang.
"Comfortable?" She's asking because she has no idea how to respond in a way that isn't trying to distract him and change the subject to something else. She'd like to do that. But she has to listen to his feelings every once in a while. At least she has a drink in her hand.
"You know, comfortable," Strange responds, like it's obvious. And then it hits him that hmm, Shura might not know what he means by comfortable. Has she ever been comfortable like this? He'd like to think so: he knows she enjoys the two of them together and definitely enjoys it when they fuck. But she's not one to openly talk about her feelings like he is.
There's a small pause before he continues talking. "Have you ever had that feeling when you're around someone that it doesn't matter what happens because no matter what, you'll still be with them? It's a calming feeling. That's what I mean by comfortable."
For all that the talk of feelings makes her comfortable, Shura will listen to Strange and think about what he says. That kind of comfort? It's the kind of thing she's avoided for most of her life, but she does understand what he means.
"That kind of thing," she murmurs, dropping her gaze to her drink. Yeah, sure, for whatever reason, she felt calmer when she was with him. If he was there, she knew he was keeping out of trouble. Or at least that's what she would have tried to convince herself a year ago. Now she's just having to accept the fact that she is comfortable around him.
He notices her looking down to her drink and remaining slightly silent. There's a pause, before Strange scoots a little bit closer to Shura and attempts to place his arm around her.
"If you don't want to talk about it, then I can change the subject. Just tell me if you're comfortable or not."
The man canโt keep his hands to himself. Shura looks back to Strange, feeling just a little suffocated by his affection and concern.
โThat ainโt it,โ she replies, letting Strange get in her personal space, shifting to fit herself closer to him. โI am comfortable, itโs just that Iโm not used to it.โ
Hopefully Strange appreciates Shuraโs honesty in the matter.
Ah. That explains a lot. A look of recognition dawns on Strange's face as he shifts his position once more, trying to make it so Shura can be as comfortable as possible.
"I can't pretend that I know exactly what you're feeling, but I know how disconcerting it can be when you're thrust into an unexpected situation."
At the rate theyโre scooching and adjusting, Shura will probably end up in Strangeโs lap. Shura will let this happen, if only because she thinks Strange will appreciate it and sheโs trying her best.
โHm? You find yourself in unexpected situations? I never would have guessed.โ Shura has no doubt that Strange was the one thrusting himself into said situations.
She has to tease him. If she doesn't tease him, she might do something goofy like taking a moment to enjoy that stupid smile of his. She's just lightly buzzed, nowhere near intoxicated enough to get all soft. But it was best to just avoid getting soft in the first place, so Shura will just take a drink and keep on teasing.
"You wouldn't have brought it up if you didn't want to talk about it, windbag."
"I do kind of want to talk about it," Strange admits, because he is the most predictable man in the world. "But some of those unexpected situations are too serious to talk about while cuddling."
Like, you know, dead wives. So, Strange focuses on an unexpected situation that's more silly than anything else.
"Did I ever tell you about my childhood? I knew I had magic when I was young, but I had no damn clue what to do with it. I was in my twenties when someone actually showed me my potential. That was unexpected as hell."
It's hard to say which is worse, the indirect mention of what Shura assumes is his dead wife or the fact that Strange actually used the word cuddle out loud. Whatever the answer, Shura tenses, feeling a twist in her gut that she can't blame on being buzzed. Fortunately for her, Strange is just wise enough to not take that particular route, so Shura can pretend that she isn't having an internal struggle.
"What, your parents didn't want to teach you or somethin'?" He grew up with money, hadn't he? If they wanted, they probably could have afforded lessons.
Strange can't help but laugh a little at that. It's a short bark of a laugh before he shakes his head.
"That would have made me happy. Or at the least, it would have made it easier for me to make a name for myself. My father was dead-set against either of those two happening."
Though he's trying, he can't hide the bitterness in his tone and his laugh.
If Shura recalls correctly (though perhaps a bit reluctantly), Strange's father had also opposed his marriage. While it was possible that it was a strict father reel in a wild child, it could be a miser of a fart bringing an unruly son to heel.
"Musta been nice to get out from under him." Well, it wasn't as if Shura didn't understand how it might feel, though her situation had probably been a little less bougie.
"Oh, it was wonderful. Call me callous, but the moment I learned he had died was one of the happiest of my life."
Is this a terrible thing to say? Absolutely. Does Strange really hate his father? Also absolutely. He's trying to keep the tone light and trying to hide the fact that he still holds a large amount of anger and resentment to the man: you don't bring up daddy issues while cuddling.
"What about you? I assume your parents were better than mine."
Thatโs a question thatโs going to lead to awkward conversations. Shura isnโt inebriated enough to miss the way he changes the subject. Unfortunately, Shuraโs parentage is also something that isnโt the greatest subject to discuss while cuddling, and sheโs stuck between wanting to change the subject and being honest.
โDunno, never knew them.โ That answers Strangeโs question, so at least she can say that she opened up a little bit. Now time to redirect the subject back to where Strange may have wanted to go in the first place. Itโs a compromise!
โSo why did you take up magic after all that?โ Maybe that would put him a bit more at ease??
